MALIBU – Olivia Newton-John’s boyfriend, Patrick Kim McDermott, was found huddled under a blanket in Jennifer Aniston’s basement early this morning. McDermott, 48, who appeared to be healthy and unharmed, was discovered about 1:30 a.m. during a security sweep of the Friends star’s mansion by Malibu police. Aniston, 36, who is filming The Break Up in Chicago with Vince Vaughn, requested the sweep after a naked California man had strolled into her house two days ago and told a butler there he had been invited for tea.
Although recent newspaper reports had described McDermott as “violent, delusional, and paranoiac,” the Van Nuys resident did not offer police any resistance after he had been discovered. He was frisked then taken immediately to police headquarters for questioning. Thus far police have issued only a terse statement saying that McDermott is in custody and that an investigation into his “recent whereabouts” is ongoing.
Police declined to comment on the possibility of a connection between McDermott and David Hesterbey, 48, the Santa Barbara mime, who was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after two of Aniston’s servants had identified him as the naked man who had entered her home. Police also declined to say whether McDermott had “a personal relationship” with Aniston, who was recently granted a divorce from her husband of four years, Brad Pitt.
McDermott went missing on or shortly after a June 30 overnight fishing trip off the California coast. His absence was reported a week later by his ex-wife, actress Yvette Nipar, when he didn’t show up for a family dinner. Nipar, who is best known for her roles on General Hospital and Days of Our Lives, has a financial interest in McDermott’s well being. She took him to court in April in an effort to collect child support payments for the couple’s thirteen-year-old son, Agamemnon.
Court records also indicate that in a March 2000 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, McDermott said he owed nearly $31,000 to creditors ranging from Home Depot to Fleet Bank. He listed his 1995 Toyota 4Runner, worth $4,500, as his most valuable property.
Newton-John, 56, a breast cancer and Grease survivor, could not be reached for comment regarding McDermott’s apprehension. She has been dating the quasi-employed photographer for nine years. They met on a canned wallaby hunt on a private ranch in the bushy highlands of Tasmania.
In other news, Nestor (Josh) Estrada, the Mercer Hotel clerk who was beaned by a telephone hurled at him by a stupid-drunk Russell Crowe in June, has settled the civil suit he had filed against Crowe. Estrada accepted $150,000 in prepaid phone cards but declined a director’s cut of Cinderella Man, Crowe’s latest film, which has been a huge disappointment in theaters.
