Study Links Obesity to Increase in Cyber Crimes

FOSTER CITY, Ca.–A study conducted by the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) reveals that obesity is no longer an impediment to committing crimes such as bullying and sexual harassment. The availability of high speed Internet connections now puts these and other “mobility-friendly” crimes within the reach of obese and even morbidly obese people online.

“Bullying has clearly been the feel-good, cyber-crime break through for obese people,” says Marvin “Tiny” McCoy, president of the NAAFA state chapter in Alabama.

“When bullying was a ‘face-to-face’ crime, fat people were more likely the ones being bullied; but the extreme popularity of Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram has leveled the playing field.”

Social media have also made bullying a ramp-accessible activity. Since the beginning of 2013, more obese people than any other group have been accused of cyber bullying. What’s more, obese folks are largely responsible for spikes in cyber stalking and online sexual harassment, too.

“On the internet nobody has to know you’re fat,” says one member of the Obesity Action Coalition. “I’ve become more self-confident and a lot more comfortable in my own skin now that I’ve been sexually harassing my new co-worker online.”

Mr. McCoy points out that although traditional forms of cyber crime have always been available to obese people—credit-card fraud, identity theft, and preying on the elderly, for example—more aggressive, threatening forms of cyber crime are where the real action is.

“Once you’ve terrorized somebody online, especially somebody thin,” he says, “fantasy football is going to seem pretty tame by comparison.”
