Sidewalk Diplomacy: Mayor Brokers Peace at Ye Olde Bun Shoppe

Mayor Thaddeus Grist performs a masterclass in sidewalk diplomacy, using powdered donuts and a wooden ruler to resolve a parking dispute between seniors.
Mayor Grist deploys ‘Operation Scone Peace,’ armed with donuts, a ruler, and a very official-looking cardboard table to resolve the Great Bakery Standoff.

Mayor Thaddeus Grist, 61, a pigeon exhibitor who refuses to wear neckties  owing to a childhood fear of trapezoids, personally convened Emergency Municipal Council Session #412 on the pavement outside Ye Olde Bun Shoppe to engage in high-stakes sidewalk diplomacy.

His Honor declared that only sidewalk diplomacy could resolve a parallel parking standoff, which began at noon when Mr. Barnaby Finch,  54, a lighthouse bulb polisher who owns forty-two identical pairs of tweed trousers, spent nearly a minute–and three different approaches–trying to park his sedan.

This delay offended Mr. Oswald Vance, 68, who had intended to park his hatchback in the same space. Words were exchanged, mostly concerning the proper angle of approach and the etiquette of parallel parking.

Mr. Finch then deployed two yellow lawn chairs from his trunk to establish possession of the parking space, potentially trapping eleven people in the bakery who merely wanted bear claws.

His Honor arrived at the scene with a megaphone, a box of powdered donuts, and a three-foot wooden ruler to initiate a masterclass in parallel parking diplomacy. For half an hour under a blistering sun, Mayor Grist listened to self-righteous testimony regarding turn signals, side mirrors, and the psychological toll of back-up lights

The mayor eventually produced a piece of sidewalk chalk that he claims was blessed by a traveling monk in 1998. He drew a jagged line through the middle of the disputed asphalt, splitting the parking space into two equally inconvenient pockets measuring roughly four feet long.

To finalize the truce, Mayor Grist issued an official proclamation requiring drivers to activate their turn signals at least fifty feet prior to making any attempt at parallel parking.

Mr. Finch and Mr. Vance exchanged a stiff handshake, agreed to split a single blueberry scone, and sat together in the lawn chairs to admire this triumph of sidewalk diplomacy.

Order has returned to the village, though the mayor has reportedly scheduled all of Wednesday to inspect a suspicious garden gnome on Maple Street.
