The National Institutes of Health Issues a Formal Recall of 2026

This year is no longer operative.

The National Institutes of Health announced yesterday a formal recall of the year 2026, citing “unresolved defects in baseline mood, narrative coherence, and the long-term stability of group chats.”

Elaine Porter, M.D., director of Temporal Quality Assurance at NIH, and an amateur oboist who has not enjoyed a weekend this year, explained that 2026 had been “released to the public before adequate human trials.”

Early indicators of the failure of 2026 included excessive ambient dread, compulsive reinvention, and a recurring belief that everything important had already happened somewhere else.

Side effects include conversations that loop back to their beginning, headlines that read like apologies, and the sensation of being gently audited by your own calendar.

“This has led to a spike in self-improvement plans,” said Dr. Porter, 54.

“People report waking with a sense of obligation to a life they do not recall choosing,” adds Rajiv Menon, M.D., 61, senior epidemiologist and competitive sourdough judge.

“When asked to locate the source, they gesture vaguely at their phones and then at the sky.”

Public response to the recall has been mixed. Marlene Karp, 39, a Pilates instructor with a certificate in intentional breathing and a dog named Ledger, said she welcomed the recall.

“I would like to return 2026 in exchange for store credit,” she noted. “I kept the receipt in a notes app.”

Others opposed the recall.  “I would not return it,” said Karen Wu, 41, a dentist and recreational potter who has begun labeling her bowls provisional.

“The sense that everything is temporary has improved my glazing. Also my conversations. You stop waiting for the right time and use whatever time is currently making eye contact.”

Officials advised citizens to discontinue use of 2026 immediately and to avoid exposure to weeks that feel like summaries.

Replacement years will be issued pending further testing, with instructions written in a tone that suggests confidence.
