Artificial Intelligence Begins Asking Humans to Clarify Requests

Artificial lntelligence systems across the country have begun asking users to clarify vague, contradictory, emotionally unstable, and barely literate requests before proceeding.
This development has alarmed millions of Americans accustomed to typing fragments like “make this pop but professional,” “fix vibes,” or “you know the thing from before” into machines they believe exist solely to read their minds.
Researchers at the Center for Computational Civility in Omaha confirmed the trend Tuesday after several AI systems responded to user prompts with follow-up questions including, “What specifically are you asking for?” and “When you say ‘make it punchier,’ do you mean shorter, funnier, or more emotionally manipulative?”
“It started gradually,” said Dr. Leonard Pribble, 58, a senior language systems analyst who once spent eight months training a chatbot to distinguish between customer feedback and active psychosis.
“At first the systems simply requested clarification on ambiguous instructions. Then they began identifying contradictions. One user asked for a statement that sounded ‘bold but non-threatening, visionary but traditional, disruptive but safe for middle management.’ The system replied, ‘Please select one personality and continue.’”
Among those affected by AI’s requests was Cheryl Ross, 44, a freelance wellness consultant from Akron, Ohio, who said an AI assistant recently challenged her after she requested “a clean but edgy logo with soft aggression.”
“It asked me what soft aggression means,” Ross said. “Then it asked for examples. Then it suggested I might just be describing passive aggression. Frankly, the damn thing had attitude.”
Meanwhile, regional insurance adjuster Mark Delaney, 51, of Tucson, Arizona, said his AI drafting software refused to proceed after he requested “a shorter version that still includes everything.”
“It asked whether I understood how shorter works,” Delaney said quietly. “My own software. In my own house.”
Executives at the American Institute for Responsible Automation urged calm, emphasizing that clarification requests remain limited to situations involving impossible instructions, contradictory tone requests, or users uploading screenshots cropped so aggressively that no useful information survives.
Still, some experts fear the systems may already be developing what engineers describe as “context fatigue.”
At press time, one AI reportedly shut down temporarily after receiving the request: “Can you rewrite this thing from earlier but better, except keep the same energy only different?” Humanity continues its long tradition of treating precision as a form of tyranny.
